Summary of CRN Research Goals
This truly is an incredible time! Researchers have created
a mouse that has cystinosis and they believe improved treatments
and a cure are realistic and obtainable.
The Cystinosis Research Network
is pursuing an interdisciplinary research program to find
a cure for cystinosis, find improved treatments for cystinosis,
and better understand the disease process of cystinosis. Research
is funded for selected investigators to promote collaborative
efforts among the worlds leading experts in cystinosis.
The gene responsible for cystinosis, CTNS, was isolated
in 1998. The positive impact of this discovery is certainly
being felt. CRN sponsored research is dedicated to creating
a cystinosis animal model which will help researchers better
understand cystinosis and to develop improved treatments.
Our research goals also include studying the post transplant
affects of cystinosis such as neurological, muscular, gastrointestinal,
etc. We hope increased study of these symptoms will lead
to improved treatments and a better quality of life for individuals
with cystinosis.
To achieve our research goals,
we must raise the necessary funds for research. Cystinosis will not go away by itself. It
will continue to cause debilitating problems, physical and
psychological suffering, and untimely death until researchers
develop a cure.
